A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
