Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Security breach at school
Learning centers in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the conflict.
