The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before the sprint shootout scheduled for 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in the championship fight, sitting 36 points behind behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his team opted for a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he spun at corner four soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before sliding over the gravel trap, and was blessed to get away with just a light touch of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the fast downhill Mergulho turn leading to the final corner on to the pit straight. Hamilton finished practice in 19th place, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car third fastest, over half a second off Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
