Mount Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Emergency Relocations

Indonesia's Semeru volcano, the highest peak on Java island, has erupted, covering multiple communities with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the maximum level.

The volcano in East Java province unleashed searing clouds of fiery ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that moved up to 7km down its slopes multiple times from noon to dusk, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 2km into the sky, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day compelled authorities to raise the volcano’s alert level on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the top level, the authority said. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

Over three hundred inhabitants in the three communities most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were evacuated to official safe havens, according to a representative for the national emergency management body.

He said that increased activity of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday led officials to expand the danger zone to 8km from the crater. Residents were urged to stay clear from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as scorching gases moved down Semeru’s slopes.

Videos on social media displayed a thick plume of ash moving through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a overpass. Residents, some with faces covered with ash and water, fled to temporary shelters or departed for alternative secure locations.

Local media indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to rescue about 178 people stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The party included 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six travel representatives, according to an official with the national park.

“They are currently safe at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official stated in a video statement. He said the station was situated 4.5km from the crater on the north side of the volcano, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was seen moving to the southeast direction. Bad weather and precipitation forced the team to spend the night there, he added.

The volcano, also called Great Mountain, has erupted numerous times in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, tens of thousands of people continue to live on its productive highlands.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in December 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and hundreds more were burned and villages were submerged in layers of mud. The eruption led to the evacuation of over ten thousand people from their houses.

The country, an island chain of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific seismic belt, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanism.
