Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
