While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a current administration. “If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.” The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A Future Secured This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release. “The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message. “It captures the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.” Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
